Life as we knew it

Life as We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1)Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The idea of the moon being knocked closer to Earth by a passing asteroid fascinated me, so I had to pick up this book immediately. I was a little put off initially by the ‘Dear Diary’ approach to the telling of Miranda’s story, though I got used to it after a few chapters.

Details on the survival tactics Miranda and her family resorted to and about how their community broke down to its most basic functions made the book feel very real – like I was reading this century’s ‘Diary of Anne Frank’.

It was compelling to see Miranda grow and change through the year of disasters that follow the moon being pushed into a ‘cozier’ orbit around Earth. Watching her process her teenage emotions and deal with the knowledge of the world changing drastically around her was painful as an adult reader, though once I reached the end of the book, Miranda was as mature as I could ever hope to be in that kind of situation.

A good read for teenage gals and anyone who enjoys Young Adult Apocalyptic fiction. Will be picking up the second installment!
